Anyways, in this article you will learn whether badminton is a team sport, what kind of sport badminton is, examples of single and team sports, and more. But first, is badminton a team sport?
Badminton is a team sport that you can play as doubles, meaning 2v2. You need at least two people to make up a team, and there are two players when playing doubles. More commonly, badminton is an individual sport when played as singles.

What Is a Definition of a Team?
There are many definitions of what a team is, but, all in all, they all mean the same thing. Take a look at the three definitions of what a team is.
”A Group of Players Forming One Side In a Competetive Game Or Sport”.
”Come Together As a Team To Achieve a Common Goal”.
”A Team Is a Group of Individuals Working Together To Achieve Their Goal”.
A team requires more than one person making the requirements being two or more people. Usually, there are more than two people in a team such as in football, ice hockey, or basketball. However, as the definition implies, two people can be a team as well. Thus, badminton is a team sport when it is played doubles.
Is Badminton a Dual Sport?
Badminton is a sport that can be played as individuals, called singles, meaning 1v1. Also, badminton can be played as teams of two as a dual-sport, meaning 2v2. In addition, you can form larger teams in badminton in a casual and recreational spirit, but only singles and doubles are in proper badminton.
So badminton is a dual-sport which means in teams of two, or individually which is the more common way. Badminton can be a hard sport (Learn Why) and the single version is considered much harder especially in a competitive level.
What Are Team Sports Examples?
Even when badminton can be played in teams of two or even more in casual badminton, it usually isn’t listed as a team sport. When you think about a team sport, you typically get images of sports with big teams in your mind.
Anyways, below is a list of some team sports and how many people each sport has playing simultaneously as a team.
Popular Team Sports | People Playing In a Team |
American Football | 11 |
Soccer | 11 |
Baseball | 9 |
Cricket | 11 |
Basketball | 5 |
Volleyball | 6 |

Note that even when ice hockey has a team of 6 players (5 players & 1 goalkeeper), there are much more people in the whole team waiting on their turn to play. The same goes for nearly every sport because the players can’t play an entire game efficiently. After all, it is so physically demanding.

My Favorite Badminton Equipment
Thanks for reading this article. I hope it brought you great value that you can implement into your own life! Below you can find some badminton equipment that I love and think you could like!
- Racket: My favorite badminton racket is the Yanox Carbonex 8000 because it fits well with my controlling playstyle. This racket is made from graphite & aluminum and weighs around 85 to 90grams, so it’s medium weight and durable. I love the control and accuracy of this racket, and the design makes me want to play badminton.
- Shuttlecocks: I like to play with yellow nylon shuttlecocks because most courts I play badminton on have a light environment, and I’m not playing at a competitive level. So, I don’t want to spend insane much money on feathers shuttlecocks because they often break. That’s why Yonex Mavis 350 shuttlecocks are my absolute favorite.
- Badminton shoes: When it comes to badminton shoes, they need to have excellent support, shock absorption, and cushioning. As you can see, I’m a Yonex lover, and that’s why I play badminton with Yonex Power Cushion Eclipsion Z badminton shoes!
- Fan Equipment: If you’re a fan more than a player, you don’t want to miss Fan Equipment by Fanatics. You can find items from various sports that bear your favorite team’s logo, such as jerseys, gift ideas, or other surprising things.
