When you think about the why, it makes sense. Tennis is a much more physically demanding sport where the players are often in a low position, running front to back and side to side, reaching to difficult positions, and so on.

This physical activity requires maximum airflow to keep the players comfortable without excessive sweat. In addition, a longer skirt would come in the way of the game, which is a big no, especially in professional levels.

On the other hand, golf doesen’t require nearly as much agility or physical activity as tennis. Although, a round of golf can be exhausting if it’s a hot day. Still, the requirements for the skirt aren’t the same.

Golf skirts are usually thicker when you compare many skirts together. This is due to the same reasons discussed. You won’t get as hot and require so much range of motion in golf that the skirt can be thicker. On a chilly day, you will be glad as it’s so.

You will often see skirts or skorts (skirts with shorts underneath) marked as tennis and golf skirts. These skirts have almost always shorts underneath, making them technically skorts.
