Can a Spinner Bowl A Bouncer? (Quick Explanation)

Cricket is an exciting game especially when the batsmen are caught by surprise with the ball they receive. If you watch the game, you probably have seen several times how the bowler tricks the batsman with the ball delivery. It’s a strategy that even batsmen can’t prepare. Although switching the ball delivery is common, you may ask if a spinner can bowl a bouncer?

A spinner can bowl a bouncer and switch the ball delivery like the fast bowlers. However, a limitation is implemented such as two bouncers for a Test match and ODI and one bouncer for T20. A bouncer serves as a signal to the batsman showing a bowler knows more than one type of ball delivery.

Can a spinner bowl a bouncer?

Spinners can bowl a bouncer and they won’t get penalized. However, they need to bowl like fast bowlers to achieve a short-pitched delivery that bounces. What a bouncer does is push the batsman onto his back foot dismissing the batsman. Spinners use it because they can get a wicket performing this strategy. 

Although it’s an effective strategy, a spinner can’t spin a bouncer all the time. During the Test match and the ODI, a spinner is only allowed to bowl two bouncers. If you’re playing T20, you can only play one bouncer. Bowling more than the allowed bouncers is equal to a no-ball, which is an illegal delivery. If you happen to deliver a no-ball, the batting team earns an extra run.

A bouncer is also delivered to warn the batsmen to stay in the crease and to avoid lunging foot forward. It prompts the batsmen that any time in the game a spinner will bowl a bouncer. It disrupts the batsmen’s technique in batting the bowl. Usually, batsmen position themselves with their foot forward decreasing the chance of the ball to spin past their bat.

However, lunging a foot forward doesn’t work with a fastball-like bouncer. If batsmen stay in this position, they may get dismissed. When a spinner delivers a bouncer, the batsmen interpret it that they must expect other delivery than the spin bowl. 

Can a spinner throw a fastball?

A bowler can switch ball delivery from spin to fast and vice versa. It’s not prohibited in the game of cricket. Cricket bowlers such as Sohail Tanvir, Manoj Prabhakar, and Phil DeFreitas switch delivery. Yet, switching ball delivery is a rare skill, so it’s surprises batsmen when it happens.

Bowlers change ball delivery for several reasons. It may be due to injury, game condition or simply the bowlers has the skill to switch. 

When bowlers experience injury, they have the option to switch the easier delivery. In several cases, fast bowlers use this option. They switch from fast bowling to spin bowling. According to the research published by the National Library of Medicine, fast bowlers have a higher incidence of injury than spin bowlers. The affected body parts include the knee, ankle, low back, and shoulder. For spin bowlers, it’s the shoulder and low back. 

Sometimes, bowlers adjust to the game condition to get a wicket. They strategize to win the game by switching the delivery. One of the popular switches is the ball delivered by Colin Miller, an Australian off-spinner. He brought the batsmen, Mathew Sinclair, on strike so he shifted to bowl at a medium pace. The ball delivery trapped Sinclair lbw.

Yet, Miller is not the only one who has the skillset to switch the ball delivery, Sohail Tanvir, Manoj Prabhakar, and Phil DeFreitas proved the skill during their matches.

Sohail was a fast bowler but bowled a left-arm spin-bowl in 2007. Manoj was popular with a fast swing ball but in one of the matches, he shifted to spin. DeFreitas was also a fast bowler but bowled spin to win the match against Sri Lanka.

Why do bowlers bowl bouncers?

Bowlers bowl bouncers for several reasons. The common reasons include intimidating the batsman and stopping him or her to come forward. 

When a bouncer is successful, it adds a physical threat to the batsman. The batsman becomes clueless and surprised on the next ball delivered, especially from a fast bowler.

In addition, intimidated batsmen may have second thoughts if they’ll keep their foot forward when they receive a bouncer. The foot-forward position is the easiest as it gives support to their upper body. It’s favorable for the batsmen to keep this position because it’s easier for them to deal with full-length deliveries. But a full ball bouncer can command batsmen not to move their front foot and to hang back in the crease, which is a bowler’s advantage.

Bowlers bowl bouncers often when they know that it’s a batsman’s waterloo. As a bowler, you can guarantee a wicket if you deliver a bouncer over a fastball. On the other hand, fast and bouncy pitches are perfect for bouncers especially when it’s quick enough.
