What is a valid serve in racquetball?
When it comes to different types of sports that make use of racquets, one of the things you should learn is that there are rules and mechanics that are unique to such sports. For example, the way you play tennis is not the same as the way you play badminton even though you are basically using rackets in these sports.
In the same way, the way you play racquetball is not the same as the way you play tennis. Even though racquetball oddly looks like tennis in the sense that it uses a racquet and a ball, it has its own unique gameplay and mechanics because of how it is its own unique sport.
That’s why, when you are serving in racquetball, it might not be the same kind of serve that you do when you are playing tennis.
When you play tennis, the most common type of service is the overhand serve, wherein you toss the ball up in the air in front of you and then hit it with your racket over your head. This allows you to put more power into your serve so that the ball travels at a faster speed.
While this may be popular in tennis, is it something that you can also do in racquetball? Can you serve overhand in racquetball?
Before we get to answer that question, the first thing we need to know is what constitutes a valid serve in racquetball. That’s because you need to look at the rules of a proper serve in racquetball for you to understand what you can or cannot do.
In racquetball, for a serve to be valid, there are certain conditions that must be met.
The first is that the serving player needs to be able to make a serve in one continuous movement.
Second, before striking the ball, the ball needs to bounce within the boundaries of the service zone first. However, if the ball bounces more than once before you get to strike it, then that would be considered a side out. Meanwhile, if the ball bounces outside the boundaries of the service zone, even if it only bounces once, then that would be a fault.
As such, when a player serves, he needs to make sure that the ball needs to hit the wall in front of him first and that it has to travel beyond the short line before the bounce.
The ball may hit the side wall once before the first bounce. Meanwhile, the ball also has to bounce within the back wall and the short line for the service to be valid.
On top of that, these serves are considered fault:
- Long serves
- Short serves
- Ceiling serves
- Three-wall serves
- Screen serves
On the other hand, here are examples of side out serves:
- Fake serve
- Illegal serve
- Touched serve
Can you serve overhand in racquetball?
So, now that you know what constitutes a valid serve in racquetball, it is now time for us to look at whether or not you can actually do an overhand serve when you are playing this sport. When doing so, we only have to look at the rules of a valid serve.
In that regard, when looking at the rules of a valid racquetball, you would see that there is nothing that says that you are not allowed to use an overhand serve when you are serving the ball.
As you can see, the only important part of serving the ball is making sure that you allow it to bounce off the floor first before you can hit it with your racket. From there, you need to make sure that the ball bounces off the front wall and the back wall.
So, with that said, the logical conclusion that anyone can come up with is that you can serve overhand in racquetball because there is nothing in the rules that say that you cannot do so. As such, you are allowed to use an overhand serve if you want to and if you prefer to use it.
Should you do an overhand serve in racquetball?
Now that you know that you can serve overhand in racquetball, the next thing you need to know is whether or not you should actually do it. After all, just because you can serve overhand, it doesn’t mean that you should be doing so.
As such, in relation to that, what you should know is that it is going to be extremely difficult to serve overhand in racquetball precisely because you need to let the ball bounce off the floor first before you can serve it.
This isn’t like tennis, where you can toss the ball up in the air in front of you before you can serve it. Instead, you need to allow the ball to bounce in front of you first before serving it using an overhand strike.
Imagine putting enough force in the initial bounce off of the floor to allow the ball to have enough bounce so that it could bounce high up in front of you. This can reduce the accuracy of the bounce as it might end up bouncing elsewhere and beyond the boundaries of the service zone. There is no assurance that it would bounce right in front of you and over your head so that you can use an overhand strike.
So, while you may be able to use an overhand serve when you are playing racquetball, it really isn’t recommended because of how inefficient and inaccurate it is. This means that you are better off using the overhand serve for other racket sports instead of using it for racquetball.
