If you have seen many different lacrosse player groups, lacrosse in popular culture, or played with them yourself, you might have seen the unusually high ratings of bad behavior. This undisputed reality brings up the question, are lacrosse players douchebags?
Generally, lacrosse players aren’t douchebags. However, the percentile of rude, entitled people who act immaturely and improperly is high compared to other sports players. This is usually because of great wealth, its privileges, and a lack of present parents.
You can’t exactly say that all lacrosse players are douchebags because that’s far from the truth. However, there are more rude people in lacrosse than in most other sports.
As said, a lot of money accessible all your life can make you feel more powerful and important than you are. As a result, a lot of douchebags and bullies are born. All of this revolves around a ”lax bro culture”, but more on that later.
When you mix all of this with absent parents who often have acquired the wealth themselves or inherited, they often haven’t been present as the responsibilities and time commitment it brings.
In addition, lacrosse is highly popular in wealthy areas where other kids have the same experience. This leads to a group of very rich kids with nothing much to do, which often results in arrogance which is douchey.
Still, most lacrosse players aren’t douchebags, but there are more when compared to other sports. Now, let’s learn about why lacrosse has a bad reputation.

Why Does Lacrosse Have a Bad Reputation?
1. Douchebag Lacrosse Players
By far, the biggest reason lacrosse has a bad reputation and is sometimes frowned upon is the unsportsmanlike behavior by the players.
Lacrosse is undoubtedly a rich elite sport in certain areas, which on its doesen’t affect and create behavior issues. However, people living a privileged and elite life without many responsibilities tend to be arrogant.
Naturally, this isn’t liked by the people. The behavior is targeted and creates a bad reputation. Given that most people haven’t been born and grown up in wealth and lack responsibilities, the target of lax bros bad behavior affects the majority of the people when there is bad behavior insight.
By no means most lacrosse players are like that, but the cold fact is that considerably more people playing lacrosse are, compared to most sports.
To finish off the douchebag lacrosse player reputation that isn’t always so, the Duke University Lacrosse Scandal is perhaps one of the most known cases where lacrosse players are accused of bad behavior.
In fact, three lacrosse players were accused of rape, and they were immediately thought guilty because of their bad behavior on campus and in nearby areas. As it turns out, the claim wasn’t true, and these lacrosse boys were branded for the rest of their life because of the false accusations. The rumor says that each of the three lacrosse buys got 20 million dollars because of the huge publicity as compensation.
2. Jealousy
Moving away from the bad reputation of lax bros, there is a lot of jealousy towards them because of their wealth, lifestyle, and the expensive cost of lacrosse. Often, lacrosse players aren’t hiding their wealth which can make people green from envy, even when they doesen’t admit it.
If you think about it, why should lacrosse players hide their wealth if they possess it? Would you? However, there is no need to be an absolute douchebag about it either.
Still, another side of the bad douchebag reputation of lacrosse is jealousy and people’s tendency to blame and point fingers at them. Think about the Duke University scandal I mentioned above. People immediately thought they were guilty of rape, one of the worst crimes, because they are wealthy and acted irresponsibly with a pinch of bad manners.
Still, irresponsible, bad, and douchebag behavior doesen’t make anybody a rapist, nor should they be accused of such without bulletproof evidence. I don’t have any doubt that blinding jealousy had a part in this and lacrosse’s overall bad reputation.
3. Lack of Popularity
Finally, lacrosse is lagging in growth because of its bad reputation and high cost, even though lacrosse is becoming more mainstream, but slowly.
In addition, lacrosse isn’t marketed as well, especially for international audiences, which greatly hinders its popularity and growth. However, the launch of PLL (Premier Lacrosse League) in 2018 has given lacrosse new hope and a boost in terms of popularity.
Still, lacrosse is perceived as a rich kids’ sport, and when other more popular and cheaper sports are available, such as soccer, basketball, and so on, it’s hard to grow.
So how does the lack of popularity affect the bad reputation of lacrosse? Well, as the sport isn’t gaining new eyes and traction, the bad reputation that remains won’t go anywhere as things are holding still.
What Is Lax Bro Culture?
As promised, I’ll explain what the famous lax bro culture is. This is perhaps one of the biggest questions I see about lacrosse, so what is it?
The official definition of lax bro is ”a guy who plays lacrosse and fully embraces the culture”. The culture of lax bros includes taking lacrosse very seriously, stylish hair called ”the flow”, lax bro slang, fast cars, big yachts, beautiful girlfriends, and preppy clothing.
The Urban Dictionary has an unbelievably accurate description of lax bro culture.
The lax bro slang includes words such as ”brah” and ”stoked” used amongst other lax bros. The preppy clothing includes polos, madras, and high white socks that often carry colors such as dark green or vineyard purple.
Can you already imagine their names from the description above? Some popular ones are Chad, Todd, Brett, Shawn, Colton, and Braylen.
This is quite an accurate story about what lax bro culture is if it’s taken the ultimate way. Of course, some lax bros aren’t the stereotypes listed as most humans and cultures doesen’t fit into the stereotype molds known to all.
